The Book Club is a group for those who would like to share opinions on a
different book
each month. Members take turns to choose a book, which we read in readiness for the next meeting.
So far, members of the
Group have enjoyed reading and talking about a diverse selection of books.
The book for March/April was Harry Thompson’s epic book, This Thing of Darkness, about the journey of The Beagle, its captain – Robert Fitzroy; the ship’s naturalist – Charles Darwin, and their adventures and tempestuous relationship. As Darwin gradually came to his challenging new views on creation and Fitzroy continued to defend the literal biblical view their lives became estranged and bitterness grew between them. Fitzroy’s life and career diminished and was increasingly difficult as Darwin’s star rose.
We agreed that it was a riveting read and shed fresh light on how the best of intentions can later be seen to cause disaster. We were saddened to learn that Harry Thompson died in the year this book was published, meaning that there will be no more writings of this calibre by him, although he had
written several non-fiction books.
The next meeting will be on 21st May, at 2pm, at Joan Rhind's. The book we are going to discuss is Barrack Obama's Dreams from my Father - a personal biography and memoir of his family and their history in different countries and cultures.
New members are very welcome. Please ‘phone Carolyn for details.
